Born in Gloucester County, Va., Walter Reed received an M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1869 and another M.D. from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1871. He joined the Army Medical Corps in 1876. Reed served in many areas throughout the country, including Fort Lowell, Az., and Baltimore, before becoming professor of bacteriology at the Army Medical School in 1893. In 1956, the Coroner's Committee of the Los Angeles County Medical Association ran a campaign to hire a new coroner for Los Angeles County and bring in a medical doctor to fill the position (medical examiner).
